The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has announced the arrest of 284 suspects in Kogi State between January and December 2024.
During the period, the agency also seized 5,232,575 kilograms of illicit drugs and counterfeit currency valued at $2 million and ₦20.4 million in various denominations.
Mustapha Yahuza, the NDLEA Commander in Kogi State, revealed these accomplishments during a press conference in Lokoja, the state capital, on Monday. He described the achievements as significant milestones in the agency’s ongoing fight against drug abuse and trafficking in the region. Yahuza also noted that the agency destroyed 10 hectares of marijuana plantations as part of its enforcement efforts.
Despite operational challenges, Yahuza commended the commitment and professionalism of the agency’s personnel, crediting their dedication for the year’s remarkable success. The confiscated substances included Cannabis Sativa, Tramadol, Diazepam, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, Exol-5, Cocaine, Codeine, Pethidine Injection, Ergometrine Injection, Nitrous Oxide, and Heroin.
In addition to enforcement, the NDLEA recorded 91 convictions while several other cases remain under trial at the Federal High Court in Lokoja. The agency also intensified its drug abuse prevention initiatives by sensitizing 51 schools and organizations across the state on the dangers of substance abuse. Furthermore, 195 individuals were counseled as part of its drug demand reduction and advocacy efforts.
Commander Yahuza issued a strong warning against the consumption and trafficking of hard drugs, emphasizing their devastating impact on individuals, communities, and the nation. The seized items have been handed over to relevant authorities for further investigation and prosecution.
