New UNIBEN Vice-Chancellor laments over Poor State of University Facilities

Prof. Edoba Omoregie, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), has expressed dissatisfaction with the dilapidated condition of facilities on campus.

Prof. Omoregie, who assumed office as the 11th substantive Vice-Chancellor yesterday, December 2, 2024, made expressed his dissatisfaction during his first inspection of the university’s facilities.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and professor of private property law took over leadership from Prof. Lilian Salami and immediately began an assessment of the institution. After visiting Hall I, II, III, the NDDC hostel, and clinical hostels, he described many of the hostels as being in an unacceptable state, noting that significant work was needed to improve their habitability.

“As a former student of this university, I feel a personal responsibility to enhance the welfare of our students and improve their living conditions,” he stated.

Prof. Omoregie reaffirmed his commitment to making students’ well-being a top priority, as promised during his inaugural speech. While acknowledging financial constraints, he assured that his administration would engage stakeholders to secure resources and provide modern facilities for the hostels.

Reflecting on her tenure, the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, highlighted achievements despite challenges. In her valedictory speech, she noted improvements in infrastructure, the handling of crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and the resolution of industrial actions.

She emphasized her administration’s efforts in balancing the staffing ratio by training and redeploying non-academic staff to fill gaps, though progress was limited by the federal government’s employment embargo. “I am proud of what we achieved, but there is still room for improvement,” she remarked.

Prof. Omoregie’s tenure is expected to build on these accomplishments, with a clear focus on enhancing the welfare and academic environment for UNIBEN students.
