The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has condemned claims made by Niger Republic’s military leader, Abdourahamane Tchiani, as baseless propaganda.
Bwala described the accusations as an attempt to incite Northern Nigeria against President Tinubu and stir chaos.
Tchiani, in an interview conducted in Hausa on Wednesday, alleged that Nigeria was colluding with France to destabilize Niger. He claimed France was negotiating with terrorists in Nigeria and had paid President Tinubu to establish a military base in the country. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, swiftly dismissed these allegations as unfounded.
Reacting in a video posted on his X page, Bwala criticized Tchiani’s statements, describing them as desperate and misleading. According to him, the military leader’s comments were aimed at exploiting ethnic and regional sentiments within Nigeria. He noted that the choice of language in the interview was a deliberate attempt to appeal to Northern Nigerians and sow discord.
“This despicable propaganda by the military head of Niger Republic is characteristic of military regimes when their popularity wanes,” Bwala remarked. “Having failed to address the economic challenges in his country, he now resorts to cheap lies and propaganda against Nigeria.”
Bwala also suggested the possibility of political collaboration within Nigeria to amplify Tchiani’s narrative, but he reaffirmed Nigeria’s longstanding leadership role in West Africa and its commitment to fostering positive bilateral relations with neighboring countries.
