Nine Dead, 21 Injured in Katsina Road Crash

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed the death of nine individuals and injuries to 21 others in a road crash in Dankama, Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The Sector Commander, Aliyu Ma’aji, disclosed this in a statement through the FRSC Public Relations Officer, Shamsudeen Babajo, on Thursday. According to Ma’aji, the accident occurred when a trailer carrying both cows and passengers separated from its main body and toppled onto a pavement.

The incident was reportedly triggered when the trailer driver attempted to avoid crushing a woman who had fallen from an overloaded Golf car carrying beans. In the process, the driver lost control of the vehicle, leading to the separation and subsequent crash.

Ma’aji confirmed that nine people lost their lives, while 21 others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured victims were immediately rushed to the Primary Healthcare Center in Kaita for initial treatment. Some were later referred to the Katsina General Hospital and the Federal Teaching Hospital, Katsina, due to the severity of their injuries.

The Sector Commander reiterated the dangers of mixing animal cargo with human passengers and urged drivers to desist from the practice. He also called on passengers to speak out against overloading and reckless driving, emphasizing that such actions are critical to reducing accidents on the highways.
