Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on President Bola Tinubu to caution cabinet ministers who fail to honor invitations from the National Assembly.
Akpabio criticized such behavior, stating that ministers who disregard legislative summons are undemocratic and should have no place in the administration.
The Senate President made these remarks on Wednesday during President Tinubu’s presentation of the 2025 budget estimates, totaling N49.7 trillion, to a joint session of the National Assembly. Addressing the President, Akpabio emphasized that the legislature has constitutional authority to act against non-compliance from ministers and presidential appointees.
“Those who disregard invitations by the National Assembly are not democratic and, therefore, have no place in your government,” Akpabio declared before a full assembly of senators and representatives. He underscored the importance of ministers and officials responding promptly to legislative requests for explanations about their duties and decisions.
President Tinubu was accompanied to the budget presentation by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior government officials. The presentation, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed to Wednesday following a Federal Executive Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
