The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of ignoring patriotic concerns over its proposed tax reforms, describing the approach as troubling and unfair.
In a statement by the forum’s chairman, A.M. Al-Amin Daggash, the NEF called on the federal government to halt the Tax Reform Bills currently before the National Assembly and initiate broader consultations with stakeholders. The group emphasized the need for a more inclusive and transparent process to avoid negative economic impacts.
“The rush to implement these tax reforms is unnecessary. Dialogue and quality contributions from Nigerians should come first before making any decisions,” Daggash said.
The NEF expressed strong opposition to the proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) increase, warning that it could weaken purchasing power, fuel inflation, and drive up interest rates. It advised the government to delay such measures until there is clear evidence of economic recovery.
Daggash also criticized the VAT revenue-sharing formula, calling it unfair to states generating the revenue. He argued that VAT allocation should be based on consumption to ensure fairness for contributing states.
The forum further accused the administration of using coercive tactics to push its policies and disregarding dissenting opinions. “The government has shown a troubling disregard for patriotic voices and appears determined to suppress opposition,” Daggash added.
While supporting reforms aligned with global best practices, the NEF stated that the proposed Tax Reform Bills lack the transparency and inclusivity needed for effective policy-making.
The group urged the government to revisit the reforms and ensure they reflect the interests and contributions of all Nigerians.
