The Imo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has apprehended two individuals accused of being notorious car snatchers.
The arrests were announced on Wednesday by the State Commandant, Mary Mbanugo, during a press briefing in Owerri.
The suspects, identified as 51-year-old Anayo Obekwe from Ahiazu Mbaise and 53-year-old Kenneth Alamonye from Ehime Mbano, were reportedly involved in the armed robbery of a navy blue Toyota Corolla in Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The stolen vehicle was recovered in Umuodu Mbieri, located in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State.
Mbanugo explained that Obekwe claimed to be a mechanic hired to repair the vehicle and insisted he was unaware it had been stolen. However, Alamonye, described as the prime suspect, confessed to the crime.
The arrests and recovery of the vehicle were achieved through the command’s surveillance efforts and enhanced security strategies deployed by its special intelligence team. Mbanugo emphasized the command’s commitment to curbing crime, particularly as the festive season approaches.
She assured residents of Imo State that the NSCDC is working tirelessly to dismantle criminal networks and ensure the safety of lives and property. Mbanugo encouraged citizens to feel secure as they return home for the holidays, stating that comprehensive security measures have been put in place for the yuletide period.
