NUJ FCT elects new leadership, first female chairperson emerges after decades

Grace Ike, a newscaster with Advocate Broadcasting Network (ADBN), has made history as the first female chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ FCT Council since its establishment 43 years ago.

Ike was elected unopposed on Wednesday and sworn in alongside four other executive members: Yahaya Ndambabo of Voice of Nigeria (VON) as Vice Chairman, Jide Oyekunle of Independent Newspaper as Secretary, and Sandra Udeike of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) as Treasurer.

The election, conducted by officials from the NUJ National Secretariat, witnessed tight security and a large turnout of journalists from various media organizations across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The newly elected officials will lead the council for the next three years, with vacant positions to be filled through a by-election.

The oath of office was administered by Ehidiamen Isibor, Esq., under the supervision of the Credentials Committee led by Henry Umoru.

In her inauguration speech, Ike described her election as the start of a “new dawn” for journalists in the FCT. She promised to implement innovative projects to enhance the welfare of NUJ members.

“With immense gratitude and a profound sense of responsibility, I stand before you today as your elected Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council. This moment is both humbling and inspiring, and I thank you sincerely for the trust and confidence you have placed in me,” Ike said.

She also extended congratulations to the newly elected NUJ National President, Alhaji Yahya Alhassan, and his team, pledging the FCT Council’s support in advancing the ideals of the journalism profession.

Addressing her supporters, particularly the women in the council, Ike expressed deep gratitude for their strength and determination, emphasizing the importance of empowering women in journalism.

Quoting John C. Maxwell, she said, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” She reaffirmed her commitment to unity, progress, and excellence within the union.

Adeiza Momohjimoh, Vice President of Zone D, presented the certificates of return to the newly elected officials and congratulated Ike on her historic, unopposed victory.

Grace Ike previously served as Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps and Vice Chairman of the FCT Correspondents Chapel. She has also worked with Independent Television (ITV) and Silverbird Television in various capacities.
