The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Y.D. Ahmed, has reiterated the scheme’s strict policy against protests and indiscipline among corps members.
During a working visit to the temporary orientation camp in Kaduna, Ahmed revealed that several corps members had attempted to stage protests in the last three months, leading to disciplinary actions.
He reminded corps members that the scheme’s bylaws clearly spell out the consequences of indiscipline and urged them to remain law-abiding.
“In NYSC, just like in the Army and Police, we don’t allow protests because we are disciplined and law-abiding. Whenever anyone tries to mislead you, refer to your bylaws,” Ahmed stated.
On safety concerns, the DG emphasized the dangers of night journeys, highlighting their link to accidents and kidnappings.
“My concern has been these incessant night journeys that have claimed so many lives. Sometimes they result in accidents; other times, kidnappings, and we never recover the victims. Corps members must prioritize their safety,” he warned.
He also assured the corps members that their security and welfare remain top priorities for the scheme.
Regarding allowances, Ahmed announced that the Federal Government has approved an increment in corps members’ monthly allowances from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000.
“The government has agreed to double the allowance from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. We are now waiting for cash backing as all other processes have been communicated to us,” he said.
Ahmed assured the corps members that the increase would reflect in their payments as soon as all formalities are completed.
