The Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, has announced the appointment of Prince Richard Ozobu as head of its national election committee.
The move aims to ensure a seamless transition of leadership from Imo State to Rivers State by January 2025.
The decision followed a high-level conclave convened by the Ohanaeze Elders’ Council and Concerned Statutory Imeobi Members in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, from December 17 to 18, 2024. In a statement issued by factional Secretary-General Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the Ndigbo Constitution and fostering unity among stakeholders.
The statement highlighted the establishment of an 11-member electoral committee chaired by Ozobu, whose extensive credentials include being a USA-trained Chartered Accountant, a former Deputy Board Chairman of the defunct Cooperative and Commerce Bank, and a long-standing Imeobi Ohanaeze Ndigbo member since 2000. The committee comprises respected scholars, professionals, and leaders from the seven Igbo-speaking states, including Professor Chibuikeya Achoakawa, Professor Achi Achi, Prince Dr. Christian Dimkpa, Dr. (Mrs.) Onyekpe Cheryl Ndidi, Barrister Uka Onwuka Okocha, Reverend Fineman Luke Ngwakwe, Mazi Obinna Okehie Collins, Barrister Sylvester Nwogu, Hon. Ochieze Chinedu Peter, and Dr. Ndukwe Kalu Egwu.
Ohanaeze emphasized its dedication to the committee’s independence, free from external pressures or political interference, and pledged to support its efforts to establish a credible and effective new leadership.
The organization also addressed concerns over attempts by political elites to influence its processes, particularly as the 2027 elections approach. Ohanaeze reiterated its commitment to preserving its socio-cultural mandate and resisting efforts to co-opt its activities for political agendas. It called on all Igbo governors to respect the original charter of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and to avoid actions that could undermine its legacy.
Ohanaeze appealed to all Igbos, both at home and in the diaspora, to unite in support of its mission to uphold the integrity of the organization and ensure a leadership transition that reflects the collective aspirations of the Igbo people.
