Oyo Police Confirm Death of 35 children in Ibadan School Stampede

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of 35 bodies of minors who tragically lost their lives in a stampede during an event in Ibadan.

In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Osifeso Adewale, revealed that six other minors sustained severe injuries and are currently in critical condition, receiving medical attention.

“So far, thirty-five minors have been documented dead, while six others are critically injured and undergoing various medical interventions,” he said.

The tragic incident occurred during a funfair organized by Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, the former Queen of the Ooni of Ife, at the Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. What was meant to be a joyous event turned catastrophic, resulting in chaos and loss of lives.

The Oyo State Police Command has arrested eight individuals connected to the event, including Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the primary sponsor.

Others arrested include Fasasi Abdulahi, the School Principal of Islamic High School, Ibadan, Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.

The police have assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances leading to the tragic stampede.
