Oyo Police Detain Principal Over Ibadan School Carnival Stampede

The Oyo State Police Command has detained the principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, in connection with a tragic stampede at the school.

Reports indicate that Fasasi was invited by the police on Wednesday and has been held in custody since.

The stampede, which occurred during a children’s carnival organized by Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, claimed the lives of at least 32 children. The event was hosted at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan.

According to sources, Fasasi was invited to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Iyaganku, Ibadan, around 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. He reportedly honored the invitation but was detained upon his arrival.

A source close to the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that Fasasi remains in custody as of the time of filing this report. “The principal of the school, Mr. Abdullahi Fasasi, has been detained by the police. He was invited around 4:00 p.m. yesterday, and he honored the invitation. He has been detained since then and has not been released,” the source disclosed.

Efforts to reach the authorities for further clarification on the principal’s detention and the investigation into the stampede are ongoing.
