The Edo State High Court in Benin came under attack on Monday when thugs attempted to disrupt a pre-hearing session on the validity of the September 21 governorship election results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The incident unfolded as supporters of seven political parties challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) victory gathered at the court. The assailants targeted attendees outside the courtroom, causing widespread panic and confusion.
Security operatives acted swiftly to restore order, securing the premises and blocking access to the court. Roadblocks were also set up along major routes leading to the area to prevent further attempts at disruption.
The ongoing court proceedings have heightened political tensions in the state, with various factions awaiting the ruling on the contested election results. Security remains tight as the hearing progresses.
