Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, is set to deliver the convocation lecture at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) in Yola on Saturday as part of the institution’s 20th-anniversary celebrations.
In a statement issued on Friday, Ibrahim Umar, spokesman for Peter Obi Media Reach, confirmed that Obi’s keynote address at AUN’s 16th Founder’s Day aligns with his tradition of speaking at renowned educational institutions worldwide, including Harvard and Yale universities.
The event will also honor the university’s founder and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for his contributions to education and human development. Umar highlighted the transformative impact of AUN, describing it as an institution committed to addressing socio-economic challenges in Africa through student-led research and outreach programs.
He noted that AUN, established in 2003, has expanded its academic offerings and affiliations with international institutions, earning a place among the top three Nigerian universities in the Times Higher Education 2024 global impact ranking. The university also hosts the American Window for the northeast zone, providing students and the public access to information on U.S. scholarships and research opportunities.
Prof. DeWayne Frazier, AUN’s President, welcomed Obi as the keynote speaker and expressed the institution’s gratitude for his acceptance. Frazier described Obi as a distinguished public servant and advocate for education, making him a fitting choice to mark the university’s milestone.
“Mr. Obi is an accomplished leader who has devoted much of his life to quality governance and service to Nigerians. His advocacy for education and development makes him an ideal speaker for this historic occasion,” Frazier stated.
With this lecture, Obi joins a distinguished list of past speakers, including Dr. Paul Vita, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Bishop Matthew Kukah, former Ugandan Vice President Dr. Gilbert Bukenya, Prof. Charles Soludo, and Prof. William Bertrand of Tulane University.
