Early Life and Education
Yarrow was raised in an upper-middle-class family that valued art and scholarship. He attended the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and later graduated from Cornell University in 1959 with a degree in psychology.
Career
After college, Yarrow became active in the Greenwich Village folk scene, leading to the formation of the iconic trio Peter, Paul and Mary in 1961, alongside Noel Paul Stookey and Mary Travers. The group achieved significant success with hits like “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” co-written by Yarrow, and “Blowin’ in the Wind.” They were known for their harmonious vocals and commitment to social causes, performing at events such as the 1963 March on Washington.
The trio disbanded in 1970, partly due to Yarrow’s conviction for taking indecent liberties with a minor, for which he served a three-month prison sentence and was later pardoned in 1981 by President Jimmy Carter. They reunited in 1978 and continued to perform until Mary Travers’ death in 2009.
