The House of Representatives has called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the immediate unfreezing of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA) accounts to restore the agency’s operations within 72 hours.
The resolution was passed on Tuesday following a motion sponsored by Deputy Speaker Ben Kalu and 32 other lawmakers. The lawmakers emphasized the urgency of resuming social intervention initiatives vital to poverty alleviation in Nigeria.
President Tinubu had previously suspended all social intervention projects in January amidst allegations of corruption within the sector. NSIPA oversees key programs, including N-Power, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP), Conditional Cash Transfers (CCT), and the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).
Kalu underscored the importance of unfreezing the accounts, stating, “Restoring NSIPA’s account aligns with the president’s vision, ensuring poverty alleviation efforts remain effective, efficient, and impactful. It is crucial to act swiftly to maintain momentum toward the administration’s poverty eradication goals.”
The House further resolved that all frozen accounts of NSIPA be reactivated immediately to enable the seamless recommencement of its programs. Additionally, they urged the federal government to release funds to pay outstanding stipends owed to 395,731 N-Power beneficiaries across the country without further delay.
The decision highlights the legislative body’s commitment to ensuring the continuity of vital social programs amid growing economic challenges.
