The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, led by Tony Okocha, held its party congresses on Saturday and described the process as peaceful, even though a court had issued an order preventing the congress from taking place. The congress was observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Department of Security Services (DSS), and the police.
Earlier, the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt had issued an interim injunction on Wednesday, stopping the APC from holding its congresses. The court’s order followed a lawsuit filed by three party members—Okwudili Ndike, Peace Oganu, and Samuel Uchegbule—who claimed they had paid for congress forms but were not given them.
Despite the court order, a statement from the APC’s Publicity Secretary in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Jacobs Chimezie, confirmed that Tony Okocha, the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the party, was present at the Ikwerre LGA congress to oversee the event. The statement, which included photos, mentioned that Okocha had cast his vote earlier in his own LGA of Obio-Akpor before arriving at the congress.
Okocha praised the peaceful nature of the congress, congratulated those who were elected, and urged them to consider their victory as a call for more work and dedication to the party. He also thanked the party leaders in Ikwerre LGA for their active participation.
The statement listed several notable party stakeholders who attended the Congress, including Chibike Ikenga, the State Publicity Secretary of APC Rivers State; Chidi Wihioka, a former member of the House of Representatives; Ezemoye Ezekiel Amadi; Dr. Anosike Joseph Orduwa; Emma Amadi; Dr. Steve Worgu; Chizi Nyeomasila; Obinna Ekem; and Charles Wobodo.
