The Senate has summoned the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo, and the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, to address the growing issue of flight delays and cancellations in the country.
The Senate also called on airline operators and other key stakeholders in the aviation sector to explain the persistent disruptions in air travel. The motion was sponsored by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC Oyo North) during a plenary session.
Senator Buhari, while presenting the motion, emphasized that the frequency of delayed and canceled flights has been increasing, creating widespread concern. He pointed out that air travel is crucial for business and official purposes, and constant disruptions are detrimental to the economy.
He further warned that such disruptions could harm the country’s socio-economic development, as air travel is essential for business activities and meeting time-sensitive appointments.
Buhari called for an investigation into the causes of the delays and urged the Senate’s Committee on Aviation to find lasting solutions. He reminded the chamber that the NCAA, as outlined in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Act, has the authority to regulate the sector and ensure airlines comply with international standards.
The senator also highlighted the need for stronger consumer protections, noting that Nigerians are often unaware of their rights to compensation for delays. He urged the NCAA to activate its regulations to hold airline operators accountable and improve their services.
