Former Senator Shehu Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has weighed in on the growing tension at the Kano Emir’s Palace.
The unrest began early Friday morning when heavily armed police officers surrounded the palace, with operations starting as early as 6 a.m.
Reports suggest the heightened security may be linked to Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II’s plans to appoint a district head for Bichi town. Sani, addressing the situation in a post on X, urged restraint, stating, “In the interest of peace, there should be serious restraint in the application of force, might, and power over the Kano emirship tussle.”
The Kano emirship has been mired in controversy in recent years. In May, former Emir Aminu Ado Bayero was dethroned by Governor Abba Yusuf during his absence, paving the way for the reinstatement of the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, who was relocated to the Kofar Kudu palace.
Bayero eventually returned to Kano and settled at the Nassarawa mini palace, leading to legal disputes both challenging and supporting the government’s decisions. The current situation reflects the ongoing complexities surrounding Kano’s traditional leadership and its impact on the region’s stability.
