Sowore Criticizes Peter Obi’s Visit to Afe Babalola Over Dele Farotimi’s Detention

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has criticized Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his recent visit to legal icon Aare Afe Babalola. The visit came shortly after Obi met with detained activist Dele Farotimi in prison during his trip to Ekiti State.

Reacting on his social media account Monday night, Sowore condemned the visit, accusing Obi of undermining efforts to address judicial injustice in Nigeria. He wrote, “I condemn those who went to ‘beg’ Chief Afe Babalola today over the unjust detention and persecution of Dele Farotimi. The delegation led by Peter Obi did colossal injustice to the struggle to drain the swamp of judicial criminality in our country. Obi’s action is like forcing Rosa Parks to return to the back of the bus of racial injustice during the civil rights era in the United States. The struggle continues! #FreeDeleFarotimiNow.”

Obi’s visit was reportedly arranged by a prominent Yoruba leader seeking a peaceful resolution to the legal conflict between Babalola and Farotimi. Farotimi was arrested in Lagos on Tuesday and charged with defamation of character against Afe Babalola.

The activist faced additional charges of cybercrime filed by the Nigerian police at the Federal High Court in Ekiti. On Monday, December 9, the court granted Farotimi bail set at ₦50 million, but his legal team is still working to meet the bail conditions.

Sowore’s criticism highlights ongoing debates over how best to address issues of justice and fairness in high-profile cases like this.
