Stop abusing, harassing us – Sex Workers begs security personnels

The Nigeria Sex Workers Association (NSWA) has called on law enforcement authorities to safeguard its members across the country from harassment, abuse, and extortion.

This appeal was made by the association’s National Coordinator, Amaka Enemo, in a statement referenced by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday.

Enemo highlighted an alarming increase in cases of physical violence, harassment, and exploitation of sex workers by both clients and law enforcement personnel. She emphasized that sex workers are not criminals but individuals with rights deserving of protection and respect.

“Despite the significant roles sex workers play in the economy and society, they continue to face systematic violence, discrimination, and stigmatization,” Enemo stated. “This violence not only endangers their lives but also undermines their fundamental rights and dignity as human beings. We deserve to work in safety and live without fear.”

She urged law enforcement agencies to uphold professionalism and recognize the humanity of sex workers by protecting them from violence and abuse. She stressed that ensuring the safety and well-being of sex workers contributes to the broader health of communities and helps mitigate the spread of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Enemo proposed measures such as comprehensive training for law enforcement officers, establishing safe reporting mechanisms, holding personnel accountable for violence or discrimination, and prosecuting perpetrators. Additionally, she advocated for public awareness campaigns to challenge stigma and discrimination against sex workers.

She called on stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the public, to collaborate with the association to address injustices and uphold the dignity of its members.

“It is time for our voices to be heard and for our rights to be respected. We deserve justice, safety, and the opportunity to live without fear,” Enemo concluded.
