The Nigeria Super Eagles have experienced a notable drop in the latest FIFA world rankings, falling from 36th to 44th globally. This eight-place decline is their most significant in recent years and marks the biggest drop recorded by any nation in November.
The setback follows a disappointing international break that included a 2-1 home loss to Rwanda in the final phase of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The defeat at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo ended Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the qualifying series.
Additionally, a 1-1 draw against the Benin Republic at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny in Ivory Coast, while enough to secure a spot at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, also contributed to their slip in rankings.
On the global stage, Argentina retained their position as the world’s top-ranked team. Niger showed the most progress, climbing nine places from 131st to 122nd and gaining the most points in this ranking update. Meanwhile, Comoros climbed to their highest-ever ranking at 103rd, while DR Congo recorded the largest points loss.
Despite Nigeria’s decline, they remain ranked fifth in Africa, one place down from their previous position. Morocco continues to lead the African rankings, holding the 14th spot globally. Senegal follows in second place, having moved up three positions to rank 17th in the world.
Egypt remains third on the continent but dropped three spots globally to 33rd, while Algeria leapfrogged Nigeria to claim fourth in Africa and maintain their 37th global ranking.
This drop is Nigeria’s most significant since February 2024, when they fell from 28th to 42nd globally, although that period also marked their biggest leap in rankings since 2013.
To reclaim their former status, the Super Eagles will need to regroup and deliver stronger performances on both the continental and global stages. Meanwhile, the global top five remain dominated by Argentina, France, Spain, England, and Brazil.
