Taraba State University has been thrown into mourning following the deaths of three lecturers within days. The deceased are Professor Akporido Samuel, former Head of the Department of Chemical Sciences, who reportedly collapsed and died in his office on Thursday; Dr. Kiliobas Sha’a, former Head of the Department of Biological Sciences, who passed away at home after battling high blood pressure; and Dr. Ibrahim Saleh Bali, who succumbed to a prolonged illness at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, on Sunday.
The sudden deaths have caused widespread panic among academic and non-academic staff at the university. Reports suggest that the late lecturers, alongside their colleagues, had been advocating for better welfare and improved salaries, but these demands had not been addressed by the state government.
The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University chapter, Dr. Mbave Joshua, expressed deep shock and grief over the losses.
He lamented the poor working conditions and financial struggles faced by ASUU members at the institution, citing the rising cost of living as a significant challenge for staff.
