Former Abia State Governor and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has defended Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South amidst criticism over his vocal stance on national issues, including the contentious tax reform bill.
In an interview with Arise News on Monday, Kalu praised Ndume’s commitment to raising critical issues, emphasizing the importance of diverse perspectives in a thriving democracy.
“We need senators like Ndume who will raise our conscience. I respect Senator Ndume very well,” Kalu said.
He criticized those attempting to silence Ndume, stating, “Those who tell Senator Ndume to shut up are not being kind to democracy. Democracy is not about one voice but about multiple voices. It is the government being guided by the majority of the people, and Ndume is one of them. He is a strong voice, and the Senate President didn’t shut him up.”
Senator Ndume has been a vocal critic of the tax reform bill, arguing that it does not adequately represent the interests of the northern region. Despite this, Kalu defended the bill, asserting that it aims to restore fiscal federalism in Nigeria.
However, Kalu noted that the bill’s proponents could have taken a more inclusive approach by consulting the Council of State, the National Economic Council, and the Governors’ Forum before presenting it to the public.
Ndume’s call for the bill’s withdrawal has gained attention as part of broader concerns about its regional implications, highlighting the ongoing debate about balancing national policies with regional interests.
