Rabiu Kwankwaso, the National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to reassess his position on the proposed Tax Reform Bills, citing concerns about their potential impact on Nigerians.
Drawing parallels with actions taken by former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, Kwankwaso urged Tinubu to prioritize the welfare of the people over the introduction of new tax measures.
In a statement shared on his X account, the former NNPP presidential candidate argued that the current economic challenges make it an inopportune time for such reforms. He emphasized that the government should focus on alleviating the financial hardships faced by citizens rather than adding to their burdens.
Kwankwaso referenced historical instances where critical bills were withdrawn in the national interest, noting that both Obasanjo and Jonathan had taken similar steps during their administrations. Obasanjo withdrew the revenue-sharing bill during his second term, while Jonathan retracted a communication to the 7th National Assembly following advice from prominent legislative leaders.
Urging Tinubu to follow this precedent, Kwankwaso stated that decisions should be driven by the common good, not personal or ego-driven motivations. He also echoed the counsel of the National Economic Council and other stakeholders who have expressed reservations about the timing and content of the proposed reforms.
Kwankwaso concluded by appealing to Tinubu to ensure that the voices of ordinary Nigerians are heard and respected, suggesting that withdrawing the bills would demonstrate a commitment to the welfare and unity of the nation.
