Heavily armed policemen and operatives of the State Security Service (SSS) have surrounded the Kano Emir’s Palace at Kofar Kudu, restricting entry and exit from the premises.
This heightened security presence follows plans by Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II to install Munir Sanusi as the newly appointed Wamban Kano and District Head of Bichi.
Sources indicate that the Emir is scheduled to accompany the Wamban Kano to his official posting in Bichi, prompting a strong security deployment. The Bichi Emir’s Palace is also reportedly under tight surveillance, with armed policemen stationed in the area.
The developments come against the backdrop of a contentious leadership dispute in Kano’s traditional institutions. Two weeks ago, APC National Chairman, Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, reaffirmed the validity of the Bichi Emirate Council and Emir Nasiru Ado Bayero as its leader during a visit to Bichi.
In contrast, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, acting on the newly enacted Kano Emirate Council Law, invalidated the appointments of five emirs, effectively removing them from their positions. Subsequently, the government appointed three second-class emirs, excluding Bichi, leaving it without an official emirate structure.
The situation has raised tensions in the region, with the security presence underscoring the fragility of the ongoing dispute over Kano’s traditional leadership.
