President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate release of funds to settle outstanding pension arrears, salary increases, and other entitlements owed to retired military personnel.
The decision came after two days of peaceful protests by military veterans at the Federal Ministry of Finance.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, disclosed the development on Friday. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Matawalle confirmed that military personnel had started receiving alerts for the three-month salary increment.
He commended President Tinubu for his swift and decisive intervention, describing it as a testament to the administration’s commitment to the welfare of active and retired military personnel.
“This is a significant step in resolving outstanding pension arrears and improving the quality of life for our veterans,” Matawalle noted.
Matawalle also applauded the efforts of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, for facilitating the timely disbursement of the funds.
He called on military personnel to remain dedicated to their responsibilities, reassuring them of the government’s continuous support to bolster morale and address national security challenges.
“Despite previous setbacks, Mr. President remains resolute in his commitment to the upliftment of our military forces, particularly as they confront the pressing challenges of insecurity,” Matawalle added.
Acknowledging the critical role of the Nigerian military in combating insurgency, terrorism, and other forms of criminality, Matawalle reiterated the government’s determination to eradicate insecurity across the nation.
He emphasized that President Tinubu is steadfast in his support for the Armed Forces, prioritizing their welfare, readiness, and resilience to ensure the security of Nigeria.
“The government remains fully committed to enhancing the capacity and morale of our Armed Forces as they work tirelessly to protect the nation,” Matawalle concluded.
