Tinubu departs France, Heads to South Africa for Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission submit

President Bola Tinubu will depart France on Monday for Cape Town, South Africa, to co-chair the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

This was disclosed in a statement by the President’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

The presidential session of the BNC is scheduled for Tuesday, December 3, 2024, and will be preceded by a ministerial meeting on Monday, December 2, at the South African Parliament Building in Cape Town.

During the session, Presidents Tinubu and Ramaphosa will engage in comprehensive discussions on key issues of bilateral, regional, and international importance. Their talks will build on agreements made during their June 2024 meeting in Johannesburg, shortly after Ramaphosa began his second term. The leaders will also review progress achieved since the 10th session of the BNC held in Abuja from November 29 to December 1, 2021.

The 11th session will feature deliberations across eight working groups focusing on specific areas of mutual interest. These include:

Political Consultations

Consular and Migration Issues

Banking and Finance

Defence and Security

Manufacturing

Social Sector Development

Mines and Energy

Trade and Investments

Several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements are expected to be signed by officials of both nations during the session.

The Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission, established in 1999, aims to strengthen friendship and cooperation between the two nations. The first session at the Heads of State level was held in October 2019 in Pretoria.

The BNC provides a platform for sustaining high-level dialogue and advancing collaboration in critical areas such as diplomacy, trade, economy, security, and other mutual interests.
