Tinubu to receive Grand patron award as NYCN celebrate 60th anniversary

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), led by Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo, has unveiled a lineup of events to mark its 60th anniversary.

In a statement signed by Sukubo, the NYCN President and Secretary of its Board of Trustees, the Council disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would receive its highest honor, the Grand Patron of Nigerian Youths Award, during the celebration.

Additionally, past NYCN leaders will be recognized for their exceptional contributions to youth development. Over 200,000 Nigerian youths are expected to participate in the ceremony, both physically and virtually.

Themed “60 Years of NYCN: Reflecting on the Past, Maximizing the Present, and Shaping the Future,” the anniversary event is scheduled for Saturday, December 7, 2024, at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Elekahia, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

According to the statement, Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara will serve as the chief host, while the Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, will be the special guest.

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Majesty Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, will co-chair the event alongside the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, who is the NYCN Royal Father of Nigerian Youths. Dr. Elizabeth Jack-Rich, the Council’s Matron, will also attend.

Renowned Kenyan lawyer and activist, Professor Patrick Lumumba, will deliver the keynote address, offering insights on the theme of the celebration. Additionally, Comrade Julius Malema, President of the Economic Freedom Fighters in South Africa, will provide his perspective on youth leadership in Africa during a special address.

Other highlights of the event include a youth empowerment luncheon, cultural exhibitions, and a parade by NYCN uniformed organizations. Attendees will include state governors, ministers, youth affairs commissioners from all 36 states, industry leaders, and youth representatives from across the nation.

Established in 1964, the NYCN has grown into Nigeria’s foremost umbrella body for youth organizations, with a vast network comprising national executive members, state chairpersons, and coordinators across the 774 local government areas of the country.
