Traders suffer huge losses as 17 shops burn to ashes in Ibadan market

A devastating fire accident engulfed 17 shops in Moniya Market, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, in the early hours of Monday, destroying goods and cash worth millions of naira.

The fire, which reportedly started around 12:30 a.m., is suspected to have been caused by a power surge.

Eyewitness accounts revealed significant losses as the blaze tore through the market, reducing valuable merchandise and stored cash to ashes. Kolawole Balogun, the Babaloja of Moniya Garage, and Saliu Bello, the Chairman of the Garage, recounted how a security guard alerted them to the fire.

Balogun said he rushed to the scene immediately upon receiving the call. He lamented the extensive damage, noting that goods worth millions of naira and cash stored by traders in their shops were lost. He praised the swift response of the fire service, which prevented even greater destruction.

Several affected traders, including Yetunde Musa, Ajetunmobi Idowu, Olaide Badmus, Balogun Sulaimon, and Ajetunmobi Kolawole, appealed to the government for urgent assistance to help them recover from their losses.
