Two Arrested Over Death of Governor Aiyedatiwa Campaign Director

Mohammed Shehu and Abubakar Umar have been arrested by the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Ondo State Police Command in connection with the death of Alaba Abbey, Campaign Director for Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa in Akoko South during the recent Ondo governorship election.

The Police Public Relations Officer for the Ondo State Command, Funmilayo Odulami-Omisanya, disclosed that the suspects confessed to kidnapping Abbey at Supare Akoko, leading to his death. They also admitted involvement in other crimes, including armed robbery across Kogi, Niger, Akoko, Ifon, Ipele, and Owo.

The police statement revealed that on November 14, 2024, the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit intercepted a Hummer bus at Ikare Junction during a stop-and-search operation. Suspicion arose when 21-year-old Shehu’s demeanor changed, prompting further interrogation.

A voice message on Shehu’s phone exposed his communication with a friend about seeking opportunities for kidnapping jobs due to financial struggles. The police traced the message and took Shehu into custody, where he confessed to various crimes.

“During interrogation, Shehu confessed to involvement in kidnapping and robbery operations, stating that their method involved abducting victims from their homes, taking them to the bush, and demanding ransom,” the statement read.

Further investigations led to the arrest of 24-year-old Umar, who admitted to being a gang member and participating in similar crimes. The suspects confessed to the Supare Akoko abduction that resulted in Abbey’s death in April, as well as a September kidnapping incident at a hotel in Owo.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang.

Mr. Abbey, who served as a ward coordinator for the Lucky Aiyedatiwa Campaign Organisation, was killed at his home in Supare Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area. His death, initially shrouded in mystery, has now been linked to the suspects following their arrest.

The police assured the public that investigations will continue to ensure justice is served.
