US Patients Rush to Nigeria for Affordable Kidney Transplants – Shettima

Thirteen patients from the United States have traveled to Nigeria for kidney transplants at the Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre.

Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this during a meeting with the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN) at the Presidential Villa.

Speaking ahead of NAN’s 37th Scientific Conference, Shettima noted that Nigeria is witnessing a rise in reverse medical tourism, as more international patients seek treatment in the country.
He attributed this trend to the expertise of Nigerian medical professionals and the relatively lower cost of procedures compared to Western countries.

There is reverse medical tourism these days because of the level of care at some of our hospitals. Recently, thirteen patients from the United States came to Nigeria for kidney transplants at Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre because it is much cheaper here, and they receive the same level of expertise available anywhere in the world,” he said.

The Vice President commended Dr. Olalekan Olatise, Chief Medical Director of Zenith Medical and Kidney Centre, for his contributions to kidney care, describing him as a dedicated professional committed to saving lives. However, he also acknowledged the financial strain many patients face, noting that while transplants provide a second chance at life, post-surgery care, including access to immunosuppressants, remains a challenge for many.

Shettima emphasized the need for greater investment in specialized medical education to sustain Nigeria’s progress in the healthcare sector. Reflecting on his time as Governor of Borno State, he recalled initiatives such as free maternal care programs and scholarships for students pursuing medical degrees abroad. He noted that 60 female students were sent to study medicine in Sudan, with 58 successfully completing their training and now working in Nigerian hospitals.
