The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has announced that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt refinery is now over 90% complete.
This update was provided by the Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, during a facility tour on Monday by representatives of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Rivers State.
The refinery’s rehabilitation process, which began in 2021 after the federal government secured a $1.5 billion contract, aims to restore the facility’s full capacity of 210,000 barrels per day (bpd). The first phase of the project, involving 60,000 bpd, was activated recently following years of delays and multiple missed deadlines.
Initial operations at the refinery sparked criticism over its low output, with NNPCL later disclosing a production rate of 1.4 million litres of petrol per day. While this figure remains modest, it marks a step forward in addressing Nigeria’s fuel import dependency and optimizing domestic refining capacity.
NNPCL assured stakeholders of its commitment to completing the refinery’s rehabilitation and achieving operational efficiency in line with global standards. The development is expected to significantly enhance the nation’s energy security and reduce reliance on imported refined products.
