The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced a two-week ban on used items markets, commonly referred to as ‘Panteka’, within the FCT.
This directive will take effect from Tuesday, January 14, 2025. The announcement was made during a meeting of the FCT Security Council.
In addition to the ban on Panteka markets, the minister has also prohibited scavenging activities in Abuja, restricting such activities solely to designated dump sites.
These measures aim to address concerns about public safety and infrastructure protection.
According to a statement released by Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, anyone caught vandalizing public infrastructure will face legal consequences, including charges for economic sabotage and attempted murder. The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to enforcing these rules to maintain order and protect public assets.
