The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revoked the ownership of 762 land plots in the Maitama 1 District of Abuja due to the non-payment of statutory fees.
Additionally, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has given a two-week ultimatum to 614 individuals and organizations to settle their outstanding Rights of Occupancy (R-of-O) fees or risk losing their plots.
The FCTA issued a notice informing the allottee(s) and title holders of the affected land in Maitama 1 that their Right of Occupancy has been withdrawn due to their failure to pay for their Certificates of Occupancy (C-of-O). This action was taken in accordance with Section 28 of the Land Use Act of 1978, which authorizes the minister to revoke rights of occupancy for non-payment or other breaches of allocation terms.
Prominent individuals affected by the revocation include the Muhammadu Buhari Trust Foundation, Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani, Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, and former governors Rochas Okorocha and Ben Ayade. Other notable figures include Senate Chief Whip Tahir Monguno and Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen.
Since assuming office in August 2023, Wike has remained firm in his commitment to enforce land administration regulations within the FCT, stating that while his decisions may not always be popular, they are necessary for the benefit of the people. “The rich will kick against some of our decisions, but anything that will help our people must be done,” he emphasized.
