Just when viewers believed the emotional turmoil of Yellowstone season 5 was reaching its conclusion, the series delivered yet another devastating blow with the untimely death of Colby, played by Denim Richards.
The season, which began with the shocking death of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), took another dark turn as Colby met his tragic end. After confessing his love for Teeter (Jennifer Landon), fans watched in disbelief as Colby was trampled to death by a horse, cutting short their budding romance.
“Colby’s death is so powerful because it’s so simple,” said executive producer Christina Voros in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “For anyone who really understands the lifestyle of cowboys and working with animals, the risks of the job are constant. It’s dangerous, and these tragedies can happen in an instant.”
The loss of a beloved character who had been with the show since season 1 has left fans heartbroken. Reactions flooded social media, with one user writing, “Y’all killed Colby, I’m good. No more Yellowstone for me.” Another lamented, “That was not cool. If ANYONE deserved a happy ending, it was Colby and Teeter. Felt so bad for Teeter upon hearing the news.”
With countless crying GIFs and emotional messages shared online, it’s clear the Yellowstone fanbase is struggling to process the loss. One user summed up the collective sentiment: “That’s not okay, Yellowstone! You could’ve let Colby and Teeter ride off into the sunset happy. Instead, I’m crying like a baby!”
As for what lies ahead, Voros hinted at the emotional fallout among Colby’s fellow cowboys. “They will struggle with the notion of blame,” she explained, adding that Rip (Cole Hauser) will feel the weight of this tragedy the most.
With only two episodes left in the season, fans are bracing for what other heartbreaks may still unfold.
