The Zamfara State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denounced the 2025 budget proposal presented by Governor Dauda Lawal to the Zamfara State House of Assembly, calling it unconstitutional and unlawful.
In a statement issued by the APC’s Publicity Secretary, Mallam Yusuf Idris Gusau, and shared with journalists, the party expressed shock over what it described as the government’s blatant disregard for constitutional norms and transparency.
The APC criticized the clandestine manner in which the budget, amounting to over ₦545 billion, was presented, claiming it lacked openness and accountability.
“Annual budget proposals are traditionally presented in public view to allow citizens and stakeholders to scrutinize and contribute to how taxpayers’ money will be utilized. Unfortunately, Governor Lawal and his administration chose secrecy, shielding the media and public from this critical process,” the statement read.
The APC further alleged that the governor’s camp manipulated the legislative process by suspending nine out of 24 lawmakers suspected of opposing the budget. This, according to the APC, left the Assembly with less than the constitutionally required two-thirds majority to deliberate and pass any bill.
“Even the remaining 14 members reportedly dropped to just eight during the session, making today’s proceedings null and void under constitutional provisions,” the statement added.
The APC demanded an immediate reversal of the budget presentation and an apology to the people of Zamfara State. It also urged anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC, to investigate the alleged financial irregularities associated with the budget process.
The statement noted:
“This act undermines democratic principles. The suspension of nearly half the lawmakers, including Minority Leader Hon. Aliyu Ango, without due process or fair hearing, further highlights the administration’s disregard for the rule of law. This leaves constituencies unrepresented during crucial decisions.”
The APC cautioned Governor Lawal against continued constitutional violations and misuse of power, warning that such actions could have dire consequences.
“Governance is bound by constitutional provisions, not personal interests. The governor’s actions are not just illegal but will inevitably backfire before the end of his tenure,” the statement concluded.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to seeking legal redress if the issues raised are not addressed promptly.
