Delegates from Zamfara State who attended the recently concluded Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State, narrowly avoided a tragic accident along the Abuja-Kaduna highway on Friday as they returned to Zamfara.
Malam Ibrahim Ahmed Gada, the Zamfara State NUJ Secretary, shared details of the incident, explaining that it occurred when the vehicle carrying the delegates, driven by the reelected Zonal Secretary for Zone A, Comrade Abdurrazak Bello Kaura, swerved to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming car. Due to ongoing road construction, both vehicles were forced onto the same lane, creating a hazardous situation.
“In a bid to avoid a direct collision, our bus veered into the opposite lane and brushed against a long tanker vehicle,” Gada recounted. “The impact caused significant damage to the front and driver’s side of the NUJ bus.”
Despite the severity of the situation, all passengers managed to escape the vehicle unassisted, with only minor injuries reported. Gada added, “We were fortunate to walk out of the bus by ourselves.”
The damaged bus was later towed to Kaduna for safekeeping and eventual repairs. While expressing gratitude for their safety, Gada called attention to the risks posed by ongoing road construction projects and appealed for improved traffic management to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The Zamfara NUJ delegates have since resumed their journey, undeterred by the harrowing experience, underscoring their commitment to their professional duties.
