Niger Assembly Summons AEDC Manager Over Power Supply contract breach

The Niger State House of Assembly has summoned the Area Manager of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) to address ongoing electricity challenges affecting the state.

The decision followed a motion presented by Hon. Sani Umar, representing Kontagora I Constituency, during a plenary session. Umar accused AEDC of breaching its contractual obligations regarding the maintenance of transmission facilities.

Highlighting the responsibilities of AEDC as a profit-driven entity regulated under the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission (NERC) Act 2023, Umar emphasized the need for accountability. He criticized AEDC for relying on community contributions to repair or replace damaged electricity infrastructure, such as transformers and high-tension cables, rather than taking responsibility.

Comparing AEDC to telecommunications companies, Umar noted that telecom operators secure their equipment independently without burdening the public. He described AEDC’s actions as a violation of the NERC Act, placing undue financial strain on residents.

The House unanimously adopted the motion, showcasing its determination to resolve the state’s electricity issues. An AEDC representative has been summoned to appear before the Assembly to address concerns about the breach of contract regarding transmission infrastructure.
