The Nigeria Police Force Zone 6 has confirmed the arrest and detention of JoePaul Obi Osowo, a journalist, human rights activist, and member of the “Obedient Movement.”
Osowo’s detention has drawn criticism on social media, with commentators alleging wrongful arrest. However, in a statement issued Friday night, Zone 6 Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nelson Okpabi, clarified that the arrest was based on allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses, as outlined in a petition filed by Osowo’s cousin.
According to Okpabi, “For the records, Mr. Osowo is currently in lawful custody at the Zone 6 Police facility following a court order. His detention relates to an ongoing investigation into allegations of fraud and obtaining money under false pretenses, as contained in a petition submitted by his cousin.”
The statement further disclosed that Osowo had been served with the court charge sheet in the presence of his legal counsel and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, December 16, 2024.
SP Okpabi emphasized the police’s commitment to professional and ethical standards in handling the case, assuring that the investigation is being conducted transparently and in line with due process. He urged the public to disregard unfounded claims circulating online, reiterating the force’s dedication to justice and fairness in all operations.
