The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) stated on Monday that any potential alliance between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, does not pose a threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

In an interview with The PUNCH, APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru dismissed the meeting between Obasanjo and Atiku, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, calling it a gathering of “indolent and lazy” politicians. The meeting was attended by Atiku and other political figures, including former governors Aminu Tambuwal and Liyel Imoke.

Basiru stated that the APC is focused on running the government and preparing for the upcoming governorship election in Anambra, scheduled for November 8, 2025. He emphasized that the APC does not pay attention to other political meetings and is confident in its ability to win elections.

Atiku, who previously ran for president in 2019 with Obasanjo’s endorsement, has been making efforts to build political alliances ahead of the 2027 election. While he downplayed the Abeokuta meeting, a source close to the discussions suggested that the politicians are considering a collective effort for the 2027 race.

Obasanjo’s endorsement of Atiku in 2019 did not result in victory, as President Muhammadu Buhari was re-elected for a second term. In recent months, Atiku has called for opposition parties to unite, warning against a one-party state under the APC.

Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed support for a coalition, but with conditions focused on transparency and good governance. The Labour Party itself, however, has no current plans for an alliance. The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has shown openness to working with Obasanjo and like-minded individuals for a meaningful collaboration.
