Bauchi Government Shuts Schools for Five Weeks Ahead of Ramadan, Parents Express Concern
The Bauchi State government has announced the closure of all schools across the state for five weeks in preparation for the 2025 Ramadan fast. The decision, approved in the state’s 2024-2025 academic calendar, affects all public and private primary, secondary, and higher institutions.
According to Jalaludeen Maina, the Information Officer of the Ministry of Education, the closure will run from March 1 to April 5, allowing students to observe Ramadan at home. He clarified that this holiday had been planned long in advance.
“Yes, we are closing all schools, and this is included in our academic calendar. Students will not be fasting while in school. Once Ramadan ends, they will resume and continue their studies,” Maina stated.
However, the decision has sparked concerns among parents, who fear it could negatively affect their children’s education.
Mrs. Sunita Joseph questioned the length of the break, expressing frustration that students might forget what they had learned before the holiday.
Ismail Raji urged the government to reconsider, warning that such a long break could contribute to higher dropout rates.
Mohammed Isa also criticized the decision, noting that Bauchi already has one of the highest numbers of out-of-school children. He called for policies that encourage education rather than disrupt it.
