ECOWAS Dismisses Allegations of Nigeria Sponsoring Terrorism Against Niger, Member States

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has firmly denied accusations suggesting that Nigeria and other member states are complicit in sponsoring terrorism.

In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS described the claims as baseless, reiterating its unwavering support for Nigeria’s peacekeeping efforts. The statement emphasized, “The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism.”

Highlighting Nigeria’s leading role in regional stability, ECOWAS praised the country’s leadership within the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has made notable progress in the fight against terrorism and fostering peace across West Africa. The regional body acknowledged Nigeria’s contributions as a “generous and magnanimous country” that has consistently prioritized peace and security not only in West Africa but across the African continent.

The Commission urged all member states to engage in constructive dialogue and refrain from making unfounded accusations that could undermine collective regional efforts.

These developments come amidst escalating tensions between Nigeria and Niger Republic. Recently, Niger’s military leader, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, accused Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of collaborating with France to destabilize Niger. Tchiani alleged that Tinubu received financial incentives from France in exchange for permitting French military activities within a specific region in Borno State.

Additionally, Niger’s authorities claimed that the Lakurawa terrorist group, purportedly supported by foreign forces, including Nigeria’s, was behind the December 13, 2024, attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.

In response, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed these allegations, reaffirming the country’s dedication to maintaining peaceful relations with Niger and its commitment to fostering stability in the region.
