FCT Minister Wike Defends Support for Tinubu, Dismisses Land Grabbing Allegations

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that he has no regrets about supporting President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections. Before his appointment as minister, Wike served as the governor of Rivers State for eight years under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Despite his former affiliation, he accepted Tinubu’s call to serve in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

Speaking at a thanksgiving service organized by the PDP in Ahoada East and West Local Government Areas of Rivers State, Wike expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for entrusting him with the FCT portfolio. Reflecting on the threats he received during the elections for backing Tinubu, Wike affirmed his commitment to the decision, saying, “I have no regrets, I have no apologies. If the opportunity comes, I will do the same thing.”

Addressing allegations of land grabbing in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike dismissed the claims as baseless. He emphasized that his role as the minister in charge of land management ensures his authority to enforce proper land use. According to him, individuals occupying government land must comply with regulations or risk having their allocations revoked.

“It is laughable to hear allegations of land grabbing against me. I am in charge of lands in Abuja; how would I grab what I oversee? The right thing must be done, regardless of propaganda or false accusations,” Wike stated.

He also expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve at the federal level, noting the complexities of managing a territory representing all Nigerians. “We must thank Mr. President. Without this opportunity, we wouldn’t have known the challenges of leading at this level. In Rivers State, it seemed tough, but Abuja comes with its own realities,” he said.

Wike concluded by reiterating his resolve to uphold due process in the FCT, regardless of opposition or public criticism.
