The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to take immediate action to rescue female students abducted from Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, Benue State.
According to NANS National Public Relations Officer, Samson Adeyemi, the students—who are from the university’s engineering department—were kidnapped on campus while returning from a night study session.
Following the incident, the university management ordered the school’s closure. While officials confirmed that three students were taken, students claim the number is four. Reports indicate that the armed kidnappers emerged from a nearby bush before seizing the victims.
Describing the abduction as “barbaric” and a serious security failure, Adeyemi expressed concern over the growing insecurity in Nigerian universities. He urged the police to act swiftly, stating that higher institutions should be safe places for learning.
He also appealed to students to remain calm, assuring them that NANS is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure the safe return of the kidnapped students.
Meanwhile, university students staged a protest on Wednesday to express their frustration over the incident.
