The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved the establishment of the Cross River State University of Education and Entrepreneurship, making it the 67th state university in Nigeria.
The Executive Secretary of NUC, Abdullahi Ribadu, announced the approval in Abuja on Tuesday while presenting the official recognition letter to Governor Bassey Otu, who was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Anthony Owan-Enoh.
Ribadu described the approval as a significant milestone aimed at fostering innovation, educational development, and entrepreneurship in the state. He emphasized that the new institution would focus on providing quality education while equipping students with the skills necessary to thrive in a modern economy. According to him, the establishment of the university aligns with the government’s commitment to advancing higher education and contributing to the socio-economic development of Cross River State and beyond.
The NUC Executive Secretary noted that Cross River already has a growing higher education sector with one federal university, one state university, and four private universities, among other tertiary institutions. He acknowledged the state government’s role in expanding access to higher education through policies, infrastructure development, and funding. The approval of a second state-owned university, he said, further underscores the government’s dedication to broadening educational opportunities.
While urging stakeholders to ensure that the institution maintains high academic standards, Ribadu stressed that the university should not merely add to the number of institutions in the country but should stand out as a center of excellence, research, and social transformation. He assured the state government of the NUC’s readiness to provide guidance and support to help the new university achieve its full potential.
In his response, Governor Otu described the approval as a dream come true for Cross River State and a historic moment for education advancement in the region. He expressed optimism that the new university would play a crucial role in addressing unemployment by equipping graduates with entrepreneurial skills. Otu commended the NUC for its support throughout the establishment process and affirmed the state’s readiness to commence academic activities.
Presenting key documents, including academic briefs, the university master plan, and legal frameworks, Otu reassured the NUC that all necessary requirements had been met. He expressed confidence that the new institution would serve as a beacon of knowledge and development, further strengthening the state’s education sector.
