Pope Francis’ Condition Improves, No Longer Critical – Vatican
Vatican City – February 28, 2025 – Pope Francis’ condition is no longer critical, according to a Vatican source, following a series of clinical improvements after battling pneumonia in both lungs.
The 88-year-old pontiff has been receiving treatment at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for the past two weeks, with the Vatican providing increasingly optimistic updates on his health.
Critical Phase Passed, But Condition Remains Complex
A Vatican official confirmed on Friday, February 28, that “the critical phase has passed, for the moment”, while cautioning that his overall condition remains complex and the prognosis is still reserved.
Earlier in the day, the Vatican reported that Francis had spent a peaceful night in hospital.
The Pope was hospitalized on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties, which later developed into pneumonia. His condition had raised global concerns, but medical updates have since offered reassurance.
Gradual Improvement In Health
Over the past week, the Vatican’s medical reports have indicated steady progress:
- Monday, February 24 – The Pope showed a “slight improvement.”
- Tuesday, February 25 – His condition was described as “critical but stable.”
- Wednesday, February 26 – Doctors noted a “further, slight improvement.”
- Thursday, February 27 – The Vatican confirmed continued improvement, but kept the prognosis “reserved.”
Medical experts emphasize that due to Francis’ age and chronic respiratory condition, full recovery may take time.
Pope Continues Work From Hospital
Despite his illness, Pope Francis has remained active, working from his private suite on the 10th floor of the hospital. According to the Vatican, he has been engaging in breathing exercises and balancing rest with prayer.
This marks the fourth hospitalization of his nearly 12-year papacy and his longest stay to date. In recent years, he has undergone colon surgery, a hernia operation, and has struggled with persistent knee and hip pain, requiring a wheelchair.
Speculation Over Possible Resignation
As the Pope nears his 89th birthday, speculation continues regarding a possible resignation.
“If the Pope recovers, many believe he will want to complete the Jubilee Year. However, once he turns 89, he may face the question of stepping down,” said Vatican expert Marco Politi.
For now, the Vatican remains hopeful that Pope Francis will make a full recovery in the coming weeks.
