Nigeria faced another massive power outage on Wednesday as the national grid collapsed, plunging many parts of the country into darkness. The grid failure occurred around 11:00 AM, leaving millions without electricity.

According to reports from power companies, the collapse was due to a system disturbance that led to a significant drop in power generation. At 11 AM, the national grid was producing 4,064 megawatts of electricity, but by 12 PM, the output had fallen drastically to just 1,203 megawatts, and by 1 PM, it reached zero.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, was unavailable for comment as she was attending an official function. However, several sources from power generation companies confirmed that the grid faced a major disturbance on Wednesday morning. Many power plants across the country lost their generation capabilities after the incident.

This collapse is the first of its kind in 2025, although Nigeria has witnessed similar blackouts in previous years. In January 2025, the grid experienced a line tripping, which caused a temporary disruption. The grid collapse on Wednesday marks another setback for the country’s energy sector, which continues to struggle with reliability issues.

In 2024, Nigeria’s national grid collapsed 12 times, contributing to the ongoing power crisis. Over the past decade, there have been more than 100 instances of grid failure, highlighting the vulnerability of the country’s energy infrastructure.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) was one of the first to acknowledge the outage. In a post shared on its social media account, AEDC confirmed that a system disturbance on the national grid at 11:34 AM had caused the outage. The company stated that it had already begun working on restoring power and assured customers that efforts were underway to stabilize the grid.

“Dear Valued Customer, We regret to inform you that a system disturbance occurred on the national grid at 11:34 AM today, causing a power outage across our franchise areas,” the AEDC’s statement read. “While gradual restoration of power supply has commenced, please be assured that we are working closely with relevant stakeholders to fully restore electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work to serve you better.”

The grid collapse is yet another example of Nigeria’s ongoing power struggles. Despite efforts to improve the country’s energy infrastructure, these regular failures continue to disrupt daily life and economic activities. As the government and electricity providers work to fix the situation, Nigerians remain hopeful that power stability will soon become a reality.
