The Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has confirmed his willingness and availability to participate in the University of Calabar’s (UNICAL) 50th-anniversary celebration, scheduled to take place from March 17 to 22, 2025.
Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday while receiving a delegation from UNICAL’s management and alumni, who paid a courtesy visit to formally invite him to the milestone event. As an alumnus of the institution, he described the anniversary as a momentous occasion and pledged his full support.
“We will actively participate and explore ways to contribute to the success of this celebration,” Akpabio stated. Reflecting on his student days at UNICAL, where he served as Speaker of the Student Parliament, he recalled his advocacy for student welfare and his experiences residing in Malabo.
Vice-Chancellor of UNICAL, Professor Florence Banku Obi, who led the delegation, expressed gratitude for Akpabio’s longstanding contributions to the university. She also announced that he had been named an official Ambassador for UNICAL at 50 in recognition of his impact, particularly during his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
“This anniversary marks a major milestone in our journey as a second-generation university in Nigeria, and we want the world to recognize our achievements,” Professor Obi stated.
The 50th-anniversary celebration will feature a series of events highlighting the university’s legacy, growth, and future aspirations.
