The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has shed light on why he spearheaded the removal of the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus.
Speaking at a thanksgiving event in Ukpata community, Ekpeye Kingdom, Rivers State, Wike disclosed that Secondus was ousted because he had plotted to make his cousin, Tele Ikuru, the governor of Rivers State instead of Siminalayi Fubara, the preferred candidate.
Wike recounted how Secondus accused him of being an enemy of the Rivers governor, claiming, “Secondus wanted his cousin to be governor and refused to support Fubara. That was why I kicked him out as PDP chairman. Today, he pretends to be the governor’s friend while labeling us as enemies.”
The minister also launched a verbal attack on Celestine Omehia, a former governor of Rivers State, calling him an “imbecile” for questioning his contributions to Rivers as an FCT Minister. Wike dismissed the criticism, explaining that his role in the FCT does not permit him to bring infrastructure to Rivers but emphasized his efforts in securing political appointments for Rivers people in the Tinubu administration.
“When I was Minister of Education, I brought a Faculty of Law to the University of Port Harcourt, provided grants to Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic and Ignatius Ajuru University, and renovated Federal Government schools in Port Harcourt. As FCT Minister, my mandate is limited to Abuja, but I have ensured Rivers people benefit from key appointments. No governor has attracted more appointments for this state than I have,” he said.
Wike dismissed Omehia’s remarks as baseless and reiterated his commitment to helping Rivers citizens despite criticism. He also thanked President Bola Tinubu for entrusting him with the FCT portfolio, describing the appointment as an opportunity to showcase his leadership capabilities.
Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chibudum Nwuche, also spoke at the event, commending Wike for his impactful leadership in the FCT and his numerous developmental projects in Rivers during his tenure as governor. Nwuche assured Wike of the unwavering support of the Ekpeye people and praised President Tinubu for appointing him, noting the minister’s remarkable achievements in Abuja.
